PC Advertising

New PCs come with lots of software. While that sounds good, it is not because some of that software loaded on to a new PC is advertising. Dell, Compaq, and Gateway like to advertise that you receive free software with your new PC. The free software is often only trial versions of software that you might like to use. In order to get the full version, you must purchase it from the software manufacturer. This is advertising plain and simple.

Most PC users run just three or four programs on their PC. They frequently write letters, memos and reports; surf the web; track finances; work with photos; listen to music; and a few other things. They rarely use and Encyclopedia, Medical Reference, play violent games, edit music and videos. PCs come with software that performs the frequent common tasks like writing for example. But other software is a crippled version of software that you must purchase to get the full featured version. So the PC manufacturer has not really provided the application, but rather provided advertising for the application.

Windows comes with simple versions of software that are most frequently used. For example, Windows provides writing software NOTEPAD, a rudimentary text editing program, and WRODPAD (or WRITE), a more capable program for preparing simple documents like business or personal letters and printing them. With WORDPAD fonts can be changed and images can be merged into documents. More sophisticated document preparation capabilities are provided by Microsoft Works WRITE. In addition to merging text and images, it corrects spelling as you type. Superscripts and subscripts, tables and other desktop publishing capabilities are also included in Works WRITE. The most sophisticated desktop publishing program is Microsoft’s WORD. WORD is used to write articles and books that are ready to publish as well as develop Internet Web pages. New PCs have NOTEPAD, WORDPAD, and either Works WRITE or MS WORD. None of these programs are free. They add one to several hundred dollars to a new PC’s price.

PCs also come with software that is advertising like software enticing you to sign up for the Microsoft Network (MSN) and other Internet services. Virus scanning software that was once a one year subscription is sometimes only a 30-day to 90-day trial version that requires you to pay for annual coverage. Personal firewall software installed on new PCs is not really active, but rather a link to enable you to purchase that software on line.

This just makes me mad. My rule is that when new PC software leads you to an online credit card purchase, uninstall it. As a minimum delete the desktop shortcuts that clutter up your PC. This advertising software only takes up space on your fixed disk drive – the filing cabinet of the PC – and does not make the PC run poorly. None-the-less it is advertising we can all do without. Nothing is sacred anymore. The movies and our PCs have all succumbed to Television like advertising.
