Does She or Doesn't She?

This is the quintessential question that all nerds must answer, Does She leaver her PC on 24 hours a day 7 days a week, or Doesn’t she? Which is best? As usual when it comes to quintessential PC questions, there is no best answer. There are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches.

Powering down your PC when it is not being used cleans up the PCs memory. All the contents of active memory (RAM) are lost when a PC is powered off. This is like cleaning up your desk. Regardless of whether you leave your PC on 24X7, it is a good policy to perform a warm restart at the beginning of each day because it cleans up the memory used by Windows.

The PC is less vulnerable to attack malaware attack. Bad software does not run in a powered off PC so it cannot corrupt it.

A powered off PC saves power.

Since air is not circulatring through the Pc there is less dust build up on the inside. This helps keep the PC cooloer.

In contrast keeping the PC on assures that it is almost always available to use.

Powwered on PCs are more vulnerable to attack by malware because they are running and Internet connected.

Components do not necessarily wear out, but the get used to running 24x7. This means if the PC is turned off, it may make strange noises and behave poorly on restart.

The bottom line here is whatever pattern you establish with your PC - powering on and off daily or keeping the power on -- just keep with that pattern. It is best to not change from one pattern to another.
