Windows 7 or Vista Rises Again

There is a definite reluctance on my part to write a column about software that is soon to be released. In my younger days back in the early 80’s I did this when writing for some PC magazines. It was important then to be first with the scoop on the newest stuff. As I have matured, I realize that there is little need to hurry. Windows 7 is scheduled to be release October 22nd. So am I going to rush right out and order a copy on the 22nd ? Should I sit in front of my computer store waiting for midnight so I can purchase it? Hell no? Why would I purchase Vista or Windows 7? The reason is I cannot purchase anything else.

Now this may seem negative, but it is not. It only reflects my need not to rush. The same attitude prevails when someone says the health care system is broken so we must immediately fix it and spend a trillion dollars. In both cases there is no need to rush and make a mistake.

Truthfully, Windows 7 is an attempt by Microsoft to regain some of its lost market momentum. This is similar to the lost momentum that has happened with health care reform. Windows 7 is based upon Vista with some refinements. The problem with Vista was not that it did not have some new good ideas, but it had so many new security features that it made it hard to maintain. Further, these new features demanded added PC hardware horsepower to run with acceptable performance e.g. new dual and quad core CPUs (two or four computers in one chip) and 4 GB of RAM (Random Access Memory) to run with any type of acceptable speed. More importantly, Vista does not tell you that it was working on something in many cases which leaves me sitting there staring at the screen like the RCA dog “Listening for His Masters Voice”.

To be sure Windows 7 comes with new features that should appeal to everyone according to those computer geeks testing Windows 7. Some features are: 1. PC Safeguard that keeps you Windows settings the same, 2. Screen Calibration that maintains consistent brightness for photos or text, 3. AppLocker that blocks other users from running your personal stash of private programs, 4. CD or DVD burning is improved and easier, 5. Empty removable drives are not displayed (sounds potentially confusing to me), 6. Dock Windows to left side of the screen by striking Windows Key and Left Arrow Key or to the right side Windows Key and Right Arrow Key, and about sixty three similar features. Can you now understand my rush to get Windows 7? Please remember I am a Nerd and not a Circus Freak Geek enthralled with Windows 7 features.

Windows 7 is inevitable. The majority of PC users will end up purchasing it and using it, but there is no rush. It certainly will not diminish Apple sales or the effectiveness of Apple advertisements with 70 new nifty features. Please do not get me wrong here Apples are computers too that have their problems. I have not met a computer that as a nerd I did not like and couldn’t fix. It is just sometimes I must learn a lot of details and spend a lot of time to get the job finished. So maturity keeps me working on PCs and Linux systems rather than learning all the tricks to fixing Apples. Apples are expensive PCs so if I did learn to fix them, I could charge more. Regardless, Windows 7 may operate better than Vista because it is an improved Vista. This may be like Windows 98 working better than Windows 95, or it could be like Windows Me (the Miserable edition that worked worse than Windows 98). Time will tell.

One thing is certain, problems with Vista and Windows 7 can be fixed. So if you get Windows 7, it can be made better. Unlike health care reform that once started portends to lead us down the road to Federal financial disaster and poor health care service. At least with PCs I have the choice to buy Windows 7 or not. Guess you can tell what is on my mind right now but out of my ability to fix. The truly sad thing is that a nerd like me can write a three page long health care bill that is better than any bill written by our arrogant serve myself first elected representatives in Washington. Windows 7 is inevitable and will be just fine.
