The Nerd and Obamacare

How can a nerd know anything about Obamacare. Nerds live in basements (from where I am writing this missive), have no social life, are all rich like Bill gates, and aspire to the worm theory of health care. You know the "worm theory" -- little kids that eat worms and dirt get less sick than little kids that are clean and eat cake. Two and a half of those points are true about me, but not the Bill Gates one.

Actually what I know about health care is plain common sense. We all know plain common sense which makes all smarter than our elected representatives. The simplest common sense is that if the current Medicare system has billions in fraud and abuse, why should we believe that an even bigger Federal run system would save that money? Won't a bigger system increase the amount of fraud and abuse?

Secondly, (this is the nerd part) how does the government reduce costs? They rule that someone (in this case doctors) take less for services. So to make a medical practice work a doctor must now supervise 20 or so health practitioners or earn less money. What does that do to the doctor patient relationship?. Also medical businesses like Hospitals and Clinics will have to deny service to people without private insurance supplementing the Government provided insurance because the Government insurance does not cover their costs. For us seniors it means that the promise of senior health care we have paid for all these years will now require us to pay a lot more to get the medical coverage we need. As Medicare eligible, I could not afford to be on Medicare. So I am right back on private insurance from my employer.

Here is the nerd part. What truly lowers costs. Competition amongst providers. As a Nerd I have tons of competitors. Nerd work is easy entry - there is no licensing, you just pay for advertising. To my customers it makes little difference that I have written four books and done a TV show on PC repair. If the young kid down the street is cheaper, they would feel that because he is young he can do the job of PC repair as well as I. Unfortunately, young people lack the passion and commitment to doing a good job that an old person has. Worse yet, PC prices keep dropping. My 1981 PC, which I still have, cost $6,000. Today, laptops 100 times more powerful and usable can go for $400. This price competition from multiple service providers and declining hardware costs keeps my Nerd prices low.

A single provider Government run Health Care System would have no competition so it could set any price it chose or save costs by denying to pay fully for services. Competition amongst all insurance companies with level ground playing rules (e.g. no exclusion of pre-existing conditions and more) would reduce cost, provide better service, and make for more effective doctor patient relationships.

Recently, while filling my prescriptions, I had to change my secondary insurer on my Medicare drug plan. Consequently a call Medicare was needed and to have them change the status in the Medicare data base so the new insurer would pay for my medications. So I am calling from the Giant in the front of the store with stacks of canned goods acting as my desk. Fortunately, nerds do not embarrass easily. After being on hold over 20 minutes waiting for a Medicare person, I got to changing the insurance provider. Before I hung up, the Government Medicare employee explained that although they had entered the changes today, they would not appear in the data base for several days. So this is the great senior health care system I have paid for all my working life. We are to believe that Obamacare will make that better?

These arrogant "my way or the highway" politicians that have a gold plated Federal medical plan need to learn now about term limits. As a nerd when there is a bad PC component, you swap it out. Similarly, we need to swap out all the currently elected politicians in Maryland. All of them need to be changed. Poorer people and younger people think that Obamacare will benefit them, but in the years to come, they will find that their health care costs more and covers less because there is no competition. The best solution is a private health insurance plan that promotes competition amongst providers similar to nerd competitor.
